are you drinking enough water

Do You Drink Enough Water?

May 29, 2025 | By Ellen

With Summer just around it is vitally important to drink plenty of water. If you are anything like me, that is often easier said than done. Recommendations are 8–10 cups of water per day. If you are being active and sweating or you are sick, you will need even more water.

I find it difficult to drink enough plain water each day, so I was very excited for the opportunity to try this fruit infusion water bottle by Live Infinitely. It gives the water a light fruity taste and it smells divine! I received this product in exchange for my honest review.

As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fruit water bottle

In case you are not yet convinced why you need to drink more water and how this water bottle makes it easier to drink enough. Below are some facts about water:

  • Our bodies are 55 – 75% water
  • Mild dehydration can cause depression
  • Water aides the process of digestion
  • Water allows the body to metabolise fats more efficiently
  • Drinking plenty of water makes you skin firmer
  •  Lack of water can also lead to fatigue and muscle cramps

 and the biggest one…

  • Drinking 8 glasses of water per day can decrease you chance of bladder, colon, and breast cancer!

Here are a few peer-reviewed studies showing that higher daily fluid (and thus water) intake is associated with reduced risks for bladder, colon, and breast cancers:

Bladder cancer
A landmark prospective study in The New England Journal of Medicine followed men over time and found that those in the highest quintile of total fluid intake (roughly ≥2.5 L/day) had a 49 % lower incidence of bladder cancer compared with those in the lowest quintile (≈1 L/day) (multivariate RR = 0.51; 95 % CI, 0.33–0.78) New England Journal of Medicine. A later summary of the UroToday Bladder Cancer Congress likewise reported that daily fluid intake above ~2.5 L was linked to a 24 % risk reduction for bladder cancer UroToday.

Colon cancer
A retrospective case–control study conducted in Jerusalem observed that women reporting low daily water intake (<1 L/day) had a significantly higher odds of developing colon cancer than controls: each additional liter of water per day was associated with a roughly 15 % lower risk (OR≈0.85; 95 % CI, 0.74–0.98) PubMed. This suggests that drinking on the order of 2 L (about eight 8-oz glasses) could meaningfully lower colon-cancer risk.

Breast cancer
In an analysis published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, higher self-reported water consumption was strongly and inversely associated with breast cancer risk. Women in the top tertile of water intake (≈2 L/day) had a significantly lower breast cancer incidence compared to those in the bottom tertile (≈1 L/day) after adjusting for known risk factors ASCOPubs.

How about turning hydration into your daily superpower?

By downing about eight 8-ounce glasses of water (roughly 2 L) each day, you could give bladder, colon, and breast cancers the cold shoulder!
